Explorers Retreat - Matlock

This is the second time we’ve stayed, first time was the pirate themed room earlier on in the year it was amazing. So my boys wanted to go back for a 6th birthday treat, I booked Gully’s Tour bus and ordered the birthday package. It was amazing! The staff provided a balloon, cake and banners inside the bus and out, we also had a visit from the mascot and gave my son a teddy. |We loved our night on the bus! Little tip though, take something warm as even in August the bus got cold in the early hours. And if you plan to take your own snacks/meals take some disposable cutlery as there isn’t any at all in the rooms. |We had the stay and play package which is fantastic, the food is basic but we enjoyed it! The place is well organised and the staff can’t do enough for you if you ask. |I have booked again for my other son’s birthday in December I’m unsure what to expect with that time of the year.. but worth a go!! Armed with dressing gowns and long johns lol

I booked this through booking.com as a treat for the children before our day out at the theme park. I didn't really know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. From the moment we arrived at the barrier it was apparent that we were going to have a nice stay, enhanced by the staff on duty.||We made our way to reception to be greeted again by the voice on the intercom. She was pleasant, polite and made us feel like we'd been part of the hotel for a while.||I booked a normal promenade room but we were shown to a Pirate themed room, we walk in and 'Wow' what a well presented, well themed room. The kids loved it and spent to next few minutes finding all the mice (not real ones) and deciding which of the three beds they wanted to sleep in. We were then told if we wanted to toast Marshmallows to make our way to reception. We got there and my daughter wanted vegetarian marshmallows, this wasn't a problem at all. My slight criticism is the price, £3.50 for a skewer of 5. Quite expensive but made my daughter evening having the vegetarian option. ||The room itself is comfortable, warm and well spaced out. I slept well although the bed was only OK, i suppose that's down to personal choice. Not enough pillows for me. The balcony opened up to views of the park, this made the kids excited for the next day. ||As with the park, it was the staff who added the value to the stay, helping the kids and generally being brilliant! We stayed for breakfast the next morning and it was good, didn't blow me away but did the job! ||We will be staying again in the near future!

Explorers Retreat Hotel where should I begin? Arrived and found it impossible to locate, no signs, barrier down and pitch black. Checked in eventually after being greeted by a young lad with no clue. Instead of being shown to a room we were told 'go across the car park, down some steps and you will find it' located room which appeared to be from the dark ages. Two single beds pushed together to make a double, sit on the toilet knees touch the shower and the sink is above the toilet. Room was absolutely freezing we were told 'we don't keep the heating on unless rooms are in use' so clearly didnt check what rooms were booked. Waited 2 hours room still freezing got told extra blankets could be provided. Ended up having to pay extra to upgrade to a themed room. Breakfast is a disaster - no need to book a table but dont turn up unless you do. Over all the place is awful, dirty and damp. Needs closing down its seen better days.

Stayed 1 night in the Willows room on an Eat, Sleep, Play package and had 2 days in the park. Pros *Accommodation was in a convenient location for the park. *No issues with parking near room. *Comfortable bed and room. *Enjoyed the park itself and liked it for what it was- quirky and quite retro in places. *Staff were consistently friendly. Cons *Room is already showing signs of wear, despite not being very old (shower area). I don't think the room has ever seen a duster in its life. This may seem unecessarily picky, but if it hasn't been dusted ever, what else isn't being cleaned? *Evening meal could have been better. Child's garlic bread was black in places. Photos of what the Eat, Sleep, Play package involved are attached, as I struggled to find this info when I was booking.

Had a fabulous time staying in the pirate themed rooms in Gulliver's Kingdom explorers retreat. Kids loved the theming and actually couldn't wait to go to bed to play in the bunk beds. Beds were comfy and everything was spotless. The view of the park once it closed off the veranda was also really nice and made a good stargazing spot. Only negative would be that while there is a mini fridge and a microwave there was no crockery in the room other than 2 mugs and some plastic cups so if you wanted to heat baby food or something you need to bring something to feed them with which wasn't made clear on the website. Other than that can't fault it. Staff are super helpful and even offered to help with out bags as we had twin babies with us so had our hands full and were upstairs which was very kind and my niece loved them getting into character and getting involved with the evening entertainment. All in all made some lovely family memory's. We didn't have evening meal or breakfast though so couldn't say what the food was like really but the prices for breakfast seemed reasonable for what you got.

We were two families booked for 3 nights in the pirate rooms. The rooms directly overlooked the park and it was a short distance into the town. I would not recommend Gullivers to anyone with mobility issues; there are steep hills both in the park and to the accommodation. |The rooms are big enough and good to have a sink, fridge and microwave. The picnic tables outside meant we could eat together. My children loved the themed rooms too. Some features in the room were a little tired and there was a weird smell in ours that didn’t disappear but in my relatives room all was fine. |It was nice to have entertainment. My children really enjoyed this and the host, Lily and another man were patient and fun with them. The receptionists were really kind helping us with plates and cutlery to eat and it was really helpful to be able to use a washing machine as this was a stop on a multi stop holiday. |I would recommend it as a fun place to stay.

We stayed in the pirate suit for 3 nights, and what can I say, the most amazing time away. |My son is severely autistic and I was amazed at how lovely the staff were towards us. They went out of their way to make it very special and catered to my son’s needs. |A special mention for Hannah the onsite manager, the most loveliest woman, she was so friendly and kind. And my son really warmed to her. Because of her, we will definitely be returning!|The park itself was really good, there were little to no queues. It is pretty hilly but we didn’t mind! |We also met gully which made my sons day. |Thank you for making our stay better than we could have imagined. |We will see you soon!

Took the grandkids for a well-deserved break to gulliver's. This place is fantastic. The room that we stayed in was a converted container, but it was great the 3 bunk beds amazing apart from the choosing!! That took some careful negotiating skills!!! Our bed was so comfortable, and we slept well. Apart from it being so hot, we left the patio door open. Evening meal simple but well cooked, breakfast again simple but nice as much tea and coffee you can drink so all in all a great break 😊
